Family Background

Dr. Mauldin is married to Janet G. Mauldin who is a public high school counselor. They have two sons; Josh, who is age 20 and Chuck, who is age 18. He is the middle child of five children. His mother, Letha, is a retired schoolteacher. His father, Rex, is a retired minister and former district superintendent in the United Methodist Church. Dr. Mauldin is an active biker and golfer. One of the things that is interesting about Janet and Gary is that they enjoy co-leading couple's spiritual growth and enrichment retreats for both clergy and lay persons.

Licenses

Dr. Mauldin is Licensed in the state of Tennessee and Texas as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Dr. Mauldin is Licensed in the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor. He has had his LPC license since 1996 and his LMFT license since 1998. He is an ordained minister and elder in the United Methodist Church since 1984. Approved Supervisor with the Texas Sate Board of Marriage and Family Therapists since 2000. Dr. Mauldin is also a trained disaster services mental health counselor with the American Red Cross.

National Council On Family Relations (NCFR) 1998 outstanding graduate student paper submission in Family Therapy section, "Forgiveness as an Intervention in Family Therapy."This paper was presented at the 1998 NCFR conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Student Achievement Award, January 27, 2000. This annual award is given to only two doctoral level students engaged in the study of marriage and family therapy who show distinguished research, community service, and involvement in their university program.

Tarleton State University Alumni Association and the College of Education and Fine Arts of Tarleton State University Alumni Academic Forum Award April 3, 2000. This award was given in recognition of outstanding leadership and dedication in career activities.

Professional Memberships

Dr. Mauldin is a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and a member of the Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. He is also a professional member of the American Counseling Association, the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors, the Texas Counseling Association and the Texas Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. He is also a member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.

Ministry Experience

Dr. Mauldin has been an ordained United Methodist minister since 1984. He received his Deacon's orders in 1984 and Elder's orders in 1986. As a United Methodist minister he has served in a variety of pastoral ministry appointments. These appointments included rural, suburban, and urban congregations. During his appointment at Wortham, Texas, Dr. Mauldin was honored by the Central Texas Annual Conference as the pastor of the outstanding rural Church for that year. His last appointment, First United Methodist Church of Midlothian, Texas, is a large multi-staff congregation of some 1200 members. As senior pastor, Dr. Mauldin supervised and led a large staff that included two additional clergy and 20 full or part time staff members. The annual budget was in access of 700,000 thousand dollars each year. The capstone of his tenure at Midlothian was the completion of the total renovation of the existing Church building and the construction of a new 2.5 million dollars Family Life Center building. Dr. Mauldin was quite active in both the construction and fund raising aspects of this project. Dr. Mauldin assisted other congregations he served with similar projects including a new Family Life Center at First United Methodist Church of Wortham, Texas, two new education buildings and a sanctuary at St. Phillips United Methodist Church in Round Rock, Texas. Finally, a building renovation and new entryway construction at Central United Methodist Church in Brownwood, Texas.

Teaching Experience

Dr. Mauldin has been an assistant professor and associate member of the graduate faculty at Tarleton State University in the Professional Counselor and Counseling Psychology Programs. Previously he has had appointments as an Adjunct Professor at Texas Woman's University, Tarleton State University and Texas Christian University in the Brite Divinity School. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in child and family development, brief therapy, and counseling/family therapy practicum and internship courses. He has taught courses in Pastoral Care and Counseling for Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry students at TCU and a master's level multicultural studies course at Texas Woman's University and at Tarleton State University. Dr. Mauldin has taught graduate courses in counseling theories, brief therapy, human development, abnormal human development, ethics and supervision of counseling and marriage and family interns and practicum students.

Testing and Assessment Experience and Training

Dr. Mauldin has successfully completed graduate courses at the Master's and Doctoral level in Career Guidance and Assessment, Standardized Testing and Measurement, Research and Statistics, Computer Assisted Statistical Measurement, Normal Human Development, and Abnormal Psychology. He has also received specific training, experience and orientation to the MMPI and MMPI-2 through a cooperative program between National Computer Systems (Now called NCS Pearson) and The University of Minnesota. This training included the administration, interpretation and use of the MMPI and MMPI-2 for purposes of forensic evaluation and in the selection of high-risk personnel including clergy and other professional personnel. He has had additional postgraduate training and experience in the administration and interpretation of the Millon Clinical Inventories (MCMI III and MCMI - Adolescent), the Inventory of Suicide Orientation, the 16 PF, the Strong Campbell Career Interest Inventory, the Career Assessment Inventory, and the Riso-Hudson Enneagram Questionnaire.

Current Pastoral Counseling Practice

Dr. Mauldin has had over 20 years experience as a pastor and pastoral counselor in a local church setting and in private practice. His practice is limited to clergy, clergy families and/or family members and conference staff and family members of the Holston Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has had extensive experience in couple therapy, individual therapy, family therapy, and adolescent therapy and child play therapy. He utilizes the following treatment modalities, Bowen Family Systems, Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative therapy, Structural Therapy and Existential Therapy. He is available for workshop presentations, retreats and couple events.

Research and Clinical Interests

The following is a listing of areas of research and clinical interest: Couple Therapy, Human Sexuality, Human Development, Solution Focused and Narrative Therapies, Interactive Play Therapy, Solution Focused Counseling and School Problems, Spirituality in Counseling and Family Therapy, Instrument Development, Statistics, and Resiliency in marriage and committed relationships.
